Hi All, Can anyone help me in tracking down the crew and/or circumstances of an A-20 Havoc crash in England on 30 June, 1944? It relates to an entry in the Unit Diary for the 316th Troop Carrier Group, based at Cottesmore, that reads: "The Group Defense-Platoon "Invaded" Barkston Heath today by Glider. These men have been specially training to repel Airborne invasion of this field, and were used to test the defenses of Barkston Heath. An A-20 which had dropped markers for the "invasion" later crashed and burned at this field. The entire crew of veteran personnel was killed" The one thing that isn't clear from this entry is the line "Crashed and burned at this field." In other entries, Cottesmore is referred to as "this field" but in the entry it could mean either Barkston Heath or Cottesmore. Either way, I cannot find any record of an A-20 crash on that date. Any help? Adam
Adam, Probably not. As the aircraft came down in friendly territory, the cew wouldn't be missing, so no need for an MACR. Cheers, Sean
Hi Guys, The MACR (#15923) is on the 416th BG site - www.416th.com at this location. There is a link on the page to the actual document in pdf format. Regards, Pat
Thanks Pat, I stand corrected - not for the first time... I did look on Fold3 but couldn't find anything. Cheers, Sean
Same here Sean, no hit on Fold3, so I just inputted the serial number inside quotes into Google, adding the term 'MACR' like so "43-10194" MACR and the 416th BG site was top of the results page. Wish I could do the same for the 'Herd of Allied Tanks' LIFE photo I found some more footage of the scene on BP yesterday here (BP Film ID #1958.01) with a few seconds extra above and beyond what we have already found, but still cannot find the spot :s Regards, Pat
