Can anyone glean any information from this photo. Just came across it in my to do list. Could it be the one on hill 30 in the NCAP photo. ??. any info would be greatly apreciated
Hi Glyn, Any chance of a higher resolution copy of the ground photo? I don't think its the one in the extract from frame 1028 of sortie US30/4108. The wings are both broken back, but still attached in the aerial view but the starboard wing in the ground photo is completed torn off as the glider passed through the grove of trees behind it. There is a marking on the side of the cockpit which ?I cannot read at the present resolution which might help identify it. I don't see any invasion stripes either on the fuselage, unless their hidden by the torn canvas at the rear wing root; again, a higher resolution copy might again help here. If indeed the stripes are missing, then this Waco is not in Normandy. Just my initial thoughts and I could be wrong! Regards, Pat
I will have a look today pat for a better photo or see if I can edit that one to gleen more info for you. I know it’s another long shot, the only reason I was making an assumption is that from the ncap photo you can see the way the glider slid in and came to rest against the trees. Also the ground looks like it has been flattened in the other photo. If it is this one then it then it flew in over an American position and was blocking the gate, the only exit out of the field. So they had to climb through the glider past a bulldozer and out the fuselage. All under constant fire from a German position. Will get onto the photo today for you. thanks pat
Got another photo pat. It is definitely not the glider on hill 30 in ncap photo Would love to find a photo of the glider in the ncap photo. And as much info/photos etc as possible on this glider. It was destined for 101st positions. The lead glider in this group was piloted by Lt Col Mike Murphy and carried Gen Pratt. It was flown by F/O Robert J Kyle. Its tug was from the 434th TCG, mission Chicago. Chalk # 51, C47 # 43-15101. Crew of the C47 2 Lt Raymond C Howard 2 Lt Eaton C Kuhn S/Sgt Marvin C Boetcher Sgt John W Beckley it crashed in the merderet. The pilot was killed later in an ambush and the other 3 were taken prisoner. The truck convoy they were in came under allied attack and only s/gt beckley survived, rest of war in pow camp. Tragic turn of events taking into account what happened to the glider it was pulling that landed in the middle of a skirmish on hill 30. Thanks. Glyn
Hi Glyn, Kile's statement for the MACR of C-47 43-15101 dated 14th June is here on Fold3. Doesn't give much info on where he landed though, other than he crash landed. Regards, Pat
Glyn, I agree with Pat on the original glider photo... The lack of invasion stripes, and even the trees look like it was a wreck from a pre- invasion training ride back in England. John
