Hi All, Does anyone know of a news feed which would deal with veterans' affairs, battlefield archaeology, Normandy travel and such? I am looking to add a news feed to the Forum such that the stories would be fed into a page without having to create manual links. Thanks, Pat
Hi Pat, not sure if this is something you are looking for, but it is one of my favorite sites (also on Twitter) http://www.warhistoryonline.com/ Francois
Hi Francois, I like what the war history online site has to offer, so I "liked" it for my facebook page. It would be interesting to see if it could be linked to the forum somehow. John
Maybe Pat knows how to link things from a technical perspective? That site does have an RSS feed, but only part of all the articles would interest us here.
Hi Guys, I have tried to implement the 'RSS to Post' plugin by Dennis Tsang but it was written for MyBB 1.4.x and will not run on the current version 1.6.10. Here is a 'down & dirty' fix until I can figure out how to get javascript to work within threads. The following code produces the window below: Code: <iframe src="http://www.warhistoryonline.com/feed" width="100%" height=600>Your browser doesn't support iframes.</iframe> <iframe src="http://www.warhistoryonline.com/feed" width="100%" height=600>Your browser doesn't support iframes.</iframe> Thanks for the feedback guys; I appreciate your time. Regards, Pat
Hi Pat, I know it isnt the perfect fit for the forum, because the scope of topics covered is pretty broad, but I haven't seen a better option yet. I also see the storyline has changed today. I hope this or something simular is what you were looking for as far as a news feed. John
Another option may still be to do it manually...... I am usually on-line in the morning, even when on holiday, browsing some of the 'ww2 news' sites like the one above. If we'd have a way of more easily 'noting' interesting articles and links, that could be an option? I too am still trying to figure out a way to easily integrate anything I find of interest. Now I 'bookmark' things and add links on my Facebook account..... but that's not ideal.
Thanks John and Francois, I have re-jigged the top navigation bar on the front page to include a link titled 'News'. It needs a bit of polishing but it does work. You will have to use your browser's return button to get back to the last Forum page hence you came. I will ask the guys in Audentio Design to include this polishing in the next customisation project. Francois, I recall back in 2000ish doing some work for a French agricultural news site whereby they copied links (with credits) from other news feeds. It went well for a few months until Reuters spotted some of their links on the site and got their legal people to 'request' a cessation If we were going to post manual links to news stories, we would need to have permission sought and granted from each source - it's doable and would certainly add value to the Forum if you feel you have the time - but please do request permission from the original source before posting. Regards, Pat
I will be careful with anything I do Pat. However, I do think things have changed, what with Facebook, Twitter and products like Paper.li. All of these carry copied links by the millions and I don't see anyone requesting 'corrections' anymore. I think it would eat up more resources even for Reuter, than used for writing actual news Since I've been in the Internet publishing business for some 20 years now, I know of many attempts to stop publication of 'links', but haven't seen many successful. As long as one doesn't copy the actual text or pictures it is just 'pointing to' and there are no laws against that. Having said that, it is much nicer to have news flashes with some actual text or even pictures, and not just links. I will ponder on.......
Grand Francois, You seem to be more up to date on this than I am, so work away and see what you come up with. Thanks, Pat
Hi All, Lots of British glider troops in many photos on the War Histroy Online feed now... GOOD STUFF ! Pat you may really like these photos ! http://www.warhistoryonline.com/war-articles/amazing-images-of-british-paratroopers-image-heavy.html John
Seen the Jeep loading before. I still don't know how they made the Jeep turn 90 degrees to get it into that Horsa .......
Currently on the War History online feed is a 1946 British film of the Battle of Arnhem titled "Theirs is the Glory" You can see the entire film with lots of great stuff, German Armor, actual soldiers and citizens, on Location !!! http://www.warhistoryonline.com/whotube-2/who-tube-wwii-battle-arnhem-theirs-glory-1946-fulll-movie.html Respectfully, John Szweda
