    Hi All,

New member Salobert has asked for our help in finding information on a series of different numbers which are embossed on what appears to be a glider tow rope connector. The object was found in a field near Azeville last month and weights 1.4Kgs. Please see pictures below:

I had a look on the web and found some good quality footage of a Waco being hooked up to a C47 using what appears to be the same connector. The footage is in the film titled 'Equipment loaded in planes and gliders for Allied D-Day invasion during World War II' on the Critical Past site.

Stills 1-3 show the hook up to the C-47 and 4 - 6 show the other end of the tow rope being hooked to the Waco. As far as I can see, the connector at both ends of the rope is one and the same as that which is shown in Salobert's photos.

Does anyone know if the numbers on the connector refer in any way to a particular glider and/or C-47 or are they just serial numbers from the manufacturer of the connector?

    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Pat

18 is the material of the connector : Steel

One thing is sure.. These numbers are not a reference to a particular CG-4 or C-47

    Thanks Patrick,

I thought such was the case.

Were these connectors used to attach the tow rope to Horsas?

    Regards,

Don't know for the Horsa but there were two connectors on the glider side of the tow rope. One for each wing

One remark about the location of the find. There is a big chance that the connector is coming from a tow rope released in the area..
