Hi All, I came across this Mustang today - invasion striped with what appears to be a Russian name on the nose: The only reference I can find to the squadron marking 'P7' is here and the unit is not identified. The quoted source site, http://p-51-mustang.com/ does not seem to be working at the moment. Anyone firstly able confirm that this is a Russian name on the nose and secondly able to ID the USAAF squadron? Thanks, Pat
Pat, I have not seen the video... Any chance it could be 'PZ' If so, it would be American 67th Fighter Wing, 486th Squadron which flew P-47's and P-51's I could also explain the American insignia. John
Hi John, I considered a 'Z' in place of a '7' but I am pretty sure there is a kink near the bottom of the stem, indicating the latter numeral, but that's only my assumption :-/ The clip is the 7th down the list on the ITN site here. Regards, Pat
Pat, Just found confirmation here... http://www.americanairmuseum.com/unit/1142 Check photo # 2 of 18 John
Thanks John, What do you make of the call letter - 'B' or 'R'? There are several candidates for both on the 'Little Friends' site. Regards, Pat
Hello there Just quickly....busy times.... from a Russian friend here: It's nor Russian and not Cyrillic. Cheers Sean
Thanks Guys, Following John's lead, I think this is a good candidate from the 'Little Friends' database: Serial No.: 43-6436 (missing digit?) Type: P-51B Unit: 486th FS Code: PZ-B Usual Pilot: Capt. Donald H. Higgins Name: Bayou Baby Comment: Landing accident Rodney 23 June 44 - Lt. David M. Reichman Regards, Pat
